THE FLYING START PROJECT

The Flying Start Project aims to break down financial and social barriers for youth in athletics. This initiative includes two main programs—the Flying Start Fund and Newcomers Flying Start Memberships—designed to make organized sports accessible to all young athletes, especially those with financial need or new to Canada.

Flying Start Fund

The Flying Start Fund provides financial support to youth athletes in Vancouver, Burnaby, and Surrey who show commitment and interest in competition. Coaches play a vital role in selecting athletes for the fund, designating those who demonstrate a strong interest in competing and a commitment to growth.

Once an athlete is chosen, funds are allocated to support essential costs—such as registration, coaching, equipment, and travel—ensuring they can participate in meets that match their skill level. Donations directly empower these young athletes, helping them connect with their community, build confidence, and reach their potential.

With 100% of contributions directed to the athletes, donors receive an annual report highlighting the meaningful impact of their support.

Newcomers Flying Start Membership

In partnership with Athletics Canada, the Thunderbirds Flying Start Fall 2024 Membership offers a free membership to youth newcomers to Canada who have lived in the country for less than five years. Through this membership, participants gain full access to the Vancouver Thunderbirds Track & Field Club from September to December 2024, including a BC Athletics Training Membership. Supported by partners like Forerunners, Peninsula Runners, Brooks, and Mizuno, this membership provides newcomers a welcoming introduction to athletics and the chance to join a vibrant community.

Youth athletes interested in joining can select their age group and location at any of our training sites in Surrey, Burnaby, and Vancouver. The Flying Start Project ensures that no young athlete misses out on the benefits of sport due to financial or social barriers.
